Analysis: Why the NIH grant cap fell apart

The Unites States National Institutes of Health’s plan to limit funding for the wealthiest labs set off a torrent of criticism, and experts say the agency has decided it wasn’t worth the trouble.

Head of extramural research Michael Lauer announced at the beginning of May that the NIH was considering a big change to how it awarded grants. Investigators would get a certain number of points for each grant they received, and there would be a cap on how many points anyone could have.

The NIH said the plan would address a growing disparity between older, wealthier investigators and early and mid-career scientists, who struggle to get funded.
