Government scientist sidelined over climate views

A scientist who was reassigned from his policy analysis job at the Department of the Interior has said that he is being punished for talking about the effects of climate change.

Joel Clement, who directed the DOI’s policy analysis office, was one of 50 senior departmental employees who were told on 15 June that they’d be moved to a new job. Now he works in the department’s natural resources revenue office, where he helps collect royalties from oil and gas extraction.

Clement said in a Washington Post opinion article on 19 July that he had filed an official complaint with the government’s special counsel following the relocation. The complaint said that his reassignment was retaliation for speaking publicly about how he sees climate change affecting native communities in Alaska.
