Five US states receive funding top-up

The National Science Foundation has awarded five states $20 million each to get their research and innovation capacities up to speed.

The awards will go to institutions in Alabama, Kansas, Rhode Island, South Carolina and Wyoming to bolster research infrastructure, fundamental research and education, the NSF announced on 19 September.

The funding is part of the Established Program to Stimulate Competitive Research, which aims to support states that have historically received less federal research funding.
