NSF to splurge on ‘Big Ideas’ in 2019

The National Science Foundation has fleshed out its plans to channel $300 million to ten ‘big ideas’ in 2019, including a fund celebrating the 250th anniversary of the United States.

The ten topics—ranging from quantum technologies and understanding the Arctic to new infrastructures—will be awarded $30m each, the NSF confirmed in an update published on 19 October.

It said that it had “been building a foundation for the big ideas through pioneering research and pilot activities” since 2017. Among the ideas is a Growing Convergence Research scheme to fund work into how interdisciplinary questions should be framed and how fruitful collaboration can be fostered.
