Azar names drug pricing and opioid tsars

Alex Azar, secretary of the United States Department of Health and Human Services, has appointed two officials to drive initiatives to lower drug prices and tackle the opioid crisis.

Daniel Best, corporate vice-president of industry relations for the pharmacy and healthcare firm CVS Health, will lead the department’s efforts to reduce the price of prescription drugs, Azar said in a statement on 29 March. Best previously held senior roles at drug company Pfizer and health insurance firm Universal American.

Brett Giroir, assistant secretary for health and former director of the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency’s Defense Sciences Office, will now also serve as senior adviser for mental health and opioid policy. A former physician and pediatrics professor, Giroir has advised academic institutions and the federal government on biomedical research and biotechnology.
