NIH director pick vows to bring R&D benefits ‘to all Americans’

Monica Bertagnolli largely sails through hearing on becoming next head of National Institutes of Health

President Biden’s nominee to be the next director of the National Institutes of Health, Monica Bertagnolli, has said that if she is approved for the role, she wants the agency’s research to benefit all American citizens.

In a generally placid Senate hearing on her nomination held on 18 October, the surgical oncologist vowed that the agency would fund research into a range of major issues, including the long-term effects of Covid-19, cancer and mental health.
