Concerns in US over transparency of AI funding

Political leaders question methods of new Artificial Intelligence Safety Institute

Political leaders in the United States have expressed concerns about the transparency with which federal funding is going to be allocated to research on artificial intelligence, while a major research funder has also issued a warning to researchers on their own use of AI.

Frank Lucas, the Republican chair of the House Committee on Science, Space, and Technology, plus Democrat committee ranking member Zoe Lofgren and four other bipartisan political leaders, wrote to the National Institute of Standards and Technology last month setting out fears about a new initiative it has been tasked with.
