NSF advised on protecting research from foreign interference

National Science Foundation told it should assess research risks on project-by-project basis

An influential science advisory group has issued recommendations to the National Science Foundation on how it can better ensure the research it funds is not used by malign actors to harm the United States.

University researchers’ awareness of security issues is “lower than warranted at present”, a report from the independent group called Jason warned, while the NSF’s director, Sethuraman Panchanathan, agreed “there are real security concerns that must be addressed” with the increasing globalisation of research.
