One-off awards for young biologists

Three major philanthropic organizations have joined together to make one-time grants to early-career life sciences researchers.

The Howard Hughes Medical Institute, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and the Simons Foundation said their Faculty Scholars program would give five-year awards of between $100,000 and $400,000 to scientists judged to show promise.

The grants are available to investigators working on biological problems at 220 institutions, according to a press release. The fund will begin with $148 million, to be spent over five years.
