AAAS calls for more reliable forensic science

Many of the practices used in forensic investigations are not based on sound science, the American Association for the Advancement of Science has told the United States Department of Justice.

In response to a DoJ request for comments on how to advance forensic science, the AAAS and several other scientific associations called for a robust and independent review of the science behind common forensic techniques. They said this was needed to ensure that “rigorous science is used in convicting the guilty and exonerating the innocent”.

The request for comment came after attorney general Jeff Sessions decided not to renew the National Commission on Forensic Science and suspended a review of testimony on forensic techniques by FBI experts.
