Professors prevail against amendment that could limit research

A joint committee of the North Dakota state legislature has removed an amendment from a bill under consideration, after several professors at the University of North Dakota (UND) warned that its language would limit academic research.

‘The amendment could have been quite harmful and difficult—it could have potentially either prevented certain kinds of research by faculty, or it might have made people nervous about whether they could do certain work that involved partnering with any organisation that has anything to do with abortion,” says Daniel Rice, a UND professor of educational leadership who coordinated the campaign to target the amendment. “This is good news for us faculty in higher education.”
