The benefits of publicly-funded academic research are quantified in a report released by the Association of American Medical Schools (AAMC) on 7 November, just as Congress is developing the tardy fiscal year 2012 appropriations for science agencies like the National Institutes of Health (NIH).
The report, conducted for AAMC by economic consulting firm Tripp Umbach, concluded that federal- and state-funded research conducted at the nation’s medical schools and teaching hospitals in 2009 added nearly $45 billion to the US economy.
