Satellite export policies said to harm space research

The export control policies for satellites need updating for the sake of science, three higher education associations are warning lawmakers on Capitol Hill.

In a letter to the Senate Armed Services Committee, the heads of the Association of American Universities, the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities, and the Council on Governmental Relations argued that the blanket statutory requirement placing all satellites on the US Munitions List (USML) harms space science research at US universities.
