Real-term fall in S&E obligations to universities reported

Federal agencies obligated $28.4 billion to more than 1,300 academic institutions for science and engineering (S&E) activities in fiscal year 2008—a 0.9 per cent increase in current dollars over FY2007 levels, but a 1.4 per cent decrease in inflation-adjusted 2005 dollars.

The figures are from the National Science Foundation’s ‘Survey of Federal Science and Engineering Support to Universities, Colleges, and Nonprofit Institutions’, released on 2 February.
