NIH panel endorses proposal to retire the bulk of agency’s chimps

The majority of the more than 350 chimpanzees owned by the National Institutes of Health and housed in research laboratories should be retired to a federal sanctuary, according to working group recommendations unanimously accepted by the NIH Council of Councils, an independent advisory body.

The suggestion comes after NIH announced plans in September to retire more than 100 of its chimpanzees at the New Iberia Research Center in Louisiana.
