Pence resurrects space council to keep closer tabs on NASA

US vice-president is relaunching the National Space Council, a long-defunct group intended to align space policy and research with White House priorities.

Pence announced the council’s revival on 7 June in a speech to NASA astronaut candidates at the Johnson Space Center in Houston. The council has been inactive for 24 years.

“America needs a National Space Council once again,” Pence said in his address, adding that “it will ensure that America never again loses [its] lead in space exploration and technology”.
