Publishers express surprise at US open-access policy change

Move to require immediate open access to publicly funded research expected to alter publishing models

Publishers have reacted with surprise to the announcement last week of a major change in the White House’s policy on research publishing.

On 25 August the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP) announced that by the end of 2025 all federally funded research must be made publicly available in freely accessible repositories at the time of publication.
