A grassroots’ funding drive has helped University of Puerto Rico raise US$3 billion for a 10-year research project to sequence the genome of the critically endangered Puerto Rican parrot.
The funds were raised through community donations that included student-organised art and fashion shows, social-networking sites, and private donations from Puerto Ricans keen on promoting local wildlife research.
