Former Brazilian president Fernando Henrique Cardoso received the $1 million Kluge Prize on 10 July, the Library of Congress in Washington announced.
Cardoso is recognised for his scholarly work in the field of social structures of government, the economy and race relations in Brazil. He served as president between 1995 and 2002 and oversaw Brazil’s democratisation after the military junta’s rule and its economic growth, the Library of Congress said.
