Tuition fees ‘rising faster than inflation’

The cost of education has been outpacing inflation for 20 years in Canada, making universities increasingly less affordable for students from low-income families, according to a report by the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives (CCPA).

The 11 September report says that tuition and compulsory fees for undergraduates have risen by an average of 6.2 per cent annually since 1990, three times faster than the rate of inflation. Today the average annual cost of a degree is CAD$6,186 per year, excluding expenses such as books and living.
