Steiner starts top UN role

Achim Steiner, the former head of the UN Environment Programme, has started a four-year term as head of the UN Development Programme.

The former executive director of UNEP took up his role as administrator of the UNDP on 19 June, following his appointment by UN secretary-general António Guterres in April.

As head of the UNDP, Steiner will oversee the organisation’s efforts to strengthen governance, prevent and respond to crises and end poverty across the world. He will also lead the UN Development Group, which combines 32 UN sustainable development funds, programmes, agencies and other bodies.
