Innovation ‘key to stem tide of antibiotic resistance’

More investment is urgently needed in research on antimicrobial resistance if rising global levels of bugs immune to drugs are to be curbed, a high-level UN group has warned.

In a hard-hitting report, the Interagency Coordination Group on Antimicrobial Resistance says that “alarming” levels of drug failure are emerging in countries of all income levels, with common diseases becoming untreatable.

The group issued a stark warning to world leaders on 30 April: act now or see an increase in deaths and significant economic damage the world over. High-income countries will not be immune, it says, and public, private and philanthropic donors need to be investing more in seeking novel antibiotics and vaccines, and coordinating better on these topics.
