India ‘must accept’ green open access as national policy

Research panel from science academies urges government to support open access

Leading Indian researchers are calling for the adoption of open access through the ‘green’ model, in which papers published behind a paywall in a journal are made freely available through an online platform such as an institutional repository.

“India needs to accept green [open access] as a national policy, both for making scientific literature available to its people and for facilitating Indian work to be published in appropriate journals in India and overseas,” said researchers from a panel of three Indian science academies in an article published on 10 April.
