Gates announces $9bn in extra funding for foundation

Research and other activities will be boosted in response to pandemic and war in Ukraine

Bill Gates has pledged to increase spending on research and other activities by his charitable foundation by 50 per cent by 2026, an increase of $9 billion on pre-Covid levels.

In a statement on the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation website, the billionaire cited “huge global setbacks”, such as the Covid-19 pandemic and the war in Ukraine, as reasons for his decision.
