Brazil updates biotech rules

The government of Brazil has introduced legislation aimed at promoting the biotechnology industry and helping the indigenous population to benefit from innovation.

In a statement, the government said that the changes would make it easier for companies to file patents on biodiversity.

The local population will also receive payment for research only when a product is created, the government said—which will reduce the initial cost for researchers and ensure that populations are adequately recompensed for the discovery.
