Construction of Brazilian research vessels underway

Brazil has started building the first of four planned marine research vessels, its government has announced.

The “floating labs” will be used for teaching and research, with participation open to federal, state and private universities, the government said on 30 August.

The fleet will be funded by the ministry of education, and a total of 40 million Brazilian reais ($12.7m) will be allocated to the projects.
