Panel puts research ethics revisions out for comment

Canada’s Interagency Advisory Panel on Research Ethics has released its latest revisions of the rules for research on human subjects and is inviting public comment on them.

The rules—known as Tri-Council Policy Statement 2 (TCPS 2)—cover research funded by the three federal funding agencies; the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council, the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council and the Canadian Institutes of Health Research.

The proposed changes mainly involve questions of how the rules will be interpreted and clarifications of rules surrounding clinical trials. But the panel also proposed fully integrating CIHR’s rules on stem cell research into the main statement.
