Canada’s National Research Council has launched a five-year, $55-million research programme to turn biomass into plastics and other materials.
The Industrial Biomaterials programme, launched on 4 November by science minister Greg Rickford, will use non-food biomass, such as wood, lignin, grain husks, flax and hemp stems to create environmentally friendly construction materials and vehicles.
The NRC is contributing $30 million over five years, with another $25 million expected to come from industry, academic institutions and other government departments.
