Health Canada publishes in ‘predatory’ journal

Health Canada is publishing papers and regulatory documents in a little-known online journal that often skips true peer review, reports the Ottawa Citizen.

The International Food Risk Analysis Journal is published by Croatian online publisher InTech Open Access, which appears on “Beall’s List” of predatory publishers, compiled by University of Colorado librarian Jeffrey Beall.

More than 30 of the journal’s 45 published articles were written by Health Canada staff and two of its three co-editors-in-chief are from the department. Besides research articles, the journal also publishes short scientific assessments and food risk analysis reports from Health Canada’s Food Directorate, which are subjected only to internal peer review by the department, the newspaper said.
