Second chance for failed NSERC applications

The Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council will give unsuccessful, high-quality research proposals from smaller institutions another opportunity for funding under a pilot programme.

NSERC has launched an initiative, Discovery Development Grants, for applicants from small universities who failed to secure funding from the main Discovery Grants competition. Winners will receive 20,000 Canadian dollars over two years to expand their research group, access specialised equipment, or boost their research programme in other ways.

The council defines small universities as those that receive less than $4 million in NSERC funding a year. No separate application is needed for the development grants, and recipients may apply for a full Discovery Grant in the second year of their development grant.
