Data access restored in British Columbia

British Columbia’s health ministry has restored access to its health data for researchers, and reinstated a contract with the University of British Columbia to evaluate drugs.

Access to the data was cut off in September 2012, after deficiencies were found in the ministry’s data protection practices.

The ministry has now strengthened its rules on data security and privacy by implementing all of the recommendations contained in reports by the provincial information and privacy commissioner and the consultancy Deloitte.
