China reveals further space plans

China’s main space contractor has said that the country plans to launch a Mars rover and build a space station by 2020.

Lei Fanpei, the chairman of the China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation, said plans were in place to launch a rover bound for Mars in or around the year 2020. He also said that China aimed to build a manned space station by 2020.

According to the Chinese Academy of Sciences, a model for the Mars rover was completed last month and presented at the Airshow China 2014. The country tried to reach Mars in 2011, but its probe became stranded in Earth’s orbit after its boosters failed to deploy.
