Crumbling Indian labs favour perks over performance

Dozens of Indian science labs are struggling to fund research as they spend too much on salaries, pensions and perks for public employees, the journal Science is reporting.

In an article published on 16 June, the magazine said that 38 Indian labs had complained that government rules on pay and innovation funding have drained the pot for basic research. Together, the 38 labs host 4,600 scientists.
