$100,000 penalty introduced after Canterbury death went unnoticed for nearly two months
New Zealand’s universities will face fines of up to $100,000 if they are found to be responsible for the serious harm or death of a student in their care, under new laws announced by education minister Chris Hipkins.
“There is no consistent approach to the welfare and pastoral care of domestic tertiary students, and we need to change that swiftly,” he said.
