UCU calls for Home Office to reconsider its decision on academic's immigration status
The general secretary of the University and College Union has warned the Home Office that its “restrictive interpretation” of visa compliance could make it harder for international staff to carry out research.
In a letter to home secretary Priti Patel, UCU general secretary Jo Grady said she was “deeply concerned” that the Home Office had refused University of Cambridge academic Asiya Islam’s application for indefinite leave to remain, partly because she had been out of the country for too many days while conducting research.
