Merkel calls out Turkish clampdown on scientific freedom during inauguration speech

German chancellor Angela Merkel and Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdoğan have officially launched the Turkish-German University (TDU) in Istanbul.

The institution was established on 24 January on the basis of a German-Turkish intergovernmental agreement. Since its conception, the university has been supported by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), and with funds from the German research ministry.
