One of Australia’s leading scientists explains how calculated risks and collaboration propelled her career
Top tips
- Go for every funding opportunity you can.
- Maintain a mixture of projects, with some audacious and others more surefire.
- Don’t change your research interests too often as this can make it difficult to build a competitive publication record.
- Spend some years abroad in good laboratories.
One of the greatest accolades in science is to have an award named after you, and this year sees the inaugural call for the Australian Academy of Science’s Suzanne Cory Medal. Nominations for the prize, which recognises outstanding research in the biological sciences, are due by 25 May.
