Tribute paid to historian who ‘defied borders and boundaries’

Richard Grove transformed the field of environmental history, says ANU obituary

The Australian National University has paid tribute to “trailblazing” environmental historian Richard Grove, who died on 25 June, aged 64.

In an obituary posted on the ANU website, historian Ruth Morgan from the national centre for Australian studies at Monash University in Melbourne says that Grove transformed the field of environmental history through his book Green Imperialism. It was the first academic study to trace the role of science and utopian ideals in colonial expansion.
