What would a proposed cut in tuition fees mean for research?

As Playbook reported yesterday, universities in England now await a government consultation on cutting tuition fees. If plans to reduce undergraduate fees from £9,250 to £7,500 come to pass, what will it mean for research, students, taxpayers and other UK universities?

The commentary to date has suggested that arts and humanities subjects would be at risk if the Westminster government were prepared to top up the cost of science, technology, engineering and maths (Stem) subjects. Counterintuitively, this might not be entirely true—although any such move will have profound consequences across the board.
