Parliamentary committee introduces mandatory research review for all proposals or bills topping €20 million
The Dutch parliament is introducing scientific assessments for all policy proposals or bills that involve expenditure of more than €20 million or are expected to have a considerable societal impact.
These scientific evidence checks are expected to help strengthen the parliament’s legislative and regulatory work, according to the proposal, which was adopted by the parliamentary Public Expenditure Committee and subsequently recommended to all standing committees of parliament in November. For each policy, relevant scientific findings will be summarised in a four-page evidence document, providing MPs with an overview of available knowledge and any information they may be missing.
