Head of Buckingham warns bill to safeguard academic free speech risks having the opposite effect
A vice-chancellor has warned that a government bill designed to protect academic freedom and free speech on campus could end up having the opposite effect.
University of Buckingham vice-chancellor James Tooley warned that a provision in the Higher Education (Freedom of Speech) Bill relating academic freedom to a researcher’s area of expertise could have a “chilling” effect on free speech.
