UCU proposes pension deal as ‘way out’ of strikes

Union says “small increase” in contributions and new USS valuation would protect current benefits

The University and College Union has set out reforms to the beleaguered pension scheme, the Universities Superannuation Scheme. If accepted by employers, the move could avert further strike action in the long-running dispute.

The UCU says its 26 January proposals offer a “way out” of disruptive industrial action in February and beyond, and that they would ensure the retirement benefits of USS members are protected in return for a “small increase” in contributions for both members and employers.
