Science agencies hail proposals, but university and research groups raise concerns
The 2023 federal budget proposal from United States president Joe Biden has prompted a flurry of responses, with heads of federal agencies heaping praise on it while more independent appraisals from the academic community provided some criticism and concerns.
Sethuraman Panchanathan, director of the National Science Foundation, said the NSF was “excited” about its proposed $10.5 billion budget—up by 19 per cent from $8.8bn in 2022—which “reflects the confidence that the president is placing in our agency and the critical role that the NSF plays to keep our country at the forefront of science, engineering and education research and innovation”.
