Australia’s new government should roll back Job-ready Graduates programme to support science, senior figures say
Calls to roll back the last government’s hikes to student tuition fees have come from across academia as the new Labor administration takes the reins, with senior science figures warning that those increases risk damaging the research world.
The previous government’s Job-ready Graduates scheme, known as JRG, doubled the cost of various undergraduate courses, including some humanities studies, and dropped the cost of others considered in demand by industry, such as engineering, when it was introduced in 2020. Arts degrees now cost over A$14,000 a year.
