Máire Geoghegan-Quinn, the previous EU research commissioner, has made a rare return to Brussels politics in an attempt to sway an intensifying fight over the bloc’s next R&D programme.
Politicians across Europe are divided over whether the 2021-27 programme Horizon Europe should continue to fund R&D proposals primarily on the basis of their quality. Some, including Dan Nica, one of the European Parliament’s two leads on the programme, say that the geographical location of applicants should be given greater consideration to reduce regional differences in participation and increase cohesion.
Geoghegan-Quinn, who helped to shape the current EU R&D Framework programme during her 2009-14 stint as research commissioner, made her views clear in a tweet on 24 October.
