Europe’s plan for scholarly publishing risks limiting author choice and slowing the transition to full open access. There are better options, says Michael Mabe.
Science is undergoing a fundamental transformation in how information is published, disseminated and used. The transition to open access and open science has the potential to provide great benefits to all involved in research. It is in this context that Plan S of the Coalition S group of funders was published on 4 September.
The International Association of Scientific, Technical and Medical Publishers brings together more than 150 publishers from 21 nations. It encompasses all business models and publisher types: open access and subscription, new entrants and traditional players, university presses, learned societies and private companies. Its members are collectively responsible for two-thirds of the papers published worldwide each year, as well as tens of thousands of reference works, databases and monographs.
