The EU’s planned cybersecurity advice and research network should not be used for defence operations, a draft report from the European Parliament’s research committee says.
The Cybersecurity Industrial, Technology, and Research Centre and the network it coordinates should be used “purely for civilian purposes”, the draft report published on 11 December says. It was prepared by Julia Reda, an MEP with the Greens and European Free Alliance political group, who is leading on the legislation for the Parliament.
The report proposes deleting from the European Commission’s plan for the centre and network an aim for them to “strive to achieve synergies between the cybersecurity civilian and defence spheres”. Other similar parts of the plan should also be deleted, it says.
