Multimorbidity research must be prioritised, academy says

The Academy of Medical Sciences has called for research funders to support coordinated and interdisciplinary studies to help treat patients with multiple medical conditions.

Funders can play an invaluable role in advancing research into multimorbidity and could maximise impact by ensuring that their activities and investments are coordinated, the academy said in a report published on 19 November.

The report follows a workshop in June organised with the Medical Research Council, the National Institute for Health Research and the Wellcome Trust. The meeting was attended by representatives from funding agencies, policymakers and researchers from high-income, low-income and middle-income countries.
