Building industry jobs ‘not seen as science’ by young women

Australia’s construction industry is not attracting female science graduates because they do not see it as a relevant career move and do not believe their abilities will be respected in a work environment with so few women, a study has found.

The University of Technology Sydney study says that construction remains the country’s most male-dominated industry, with “the lowest representation of women of all industry sectors”.

Led by Phillippa Carnemolla, a research fellow with the university’s school of built environment, the one-year study looked at how the construction industry was perceived by young women as a future career path for science and engineering graduates.
