Having long had an established base in the Antarctic, Italy’s researchers are now looking north. Fabio Turone follows the trend compass pointing at a cold summer for science.

The classic image of early summer in Italy is one of trattoria dining and sunlit orange groves. But the country’s three-year plan for research on Arctic issues is hoped to direct scientific priorities towards the frozen north.

The plan, created jointly by the research and foreign affairs ministries, includes the launch of two research institutes, funded by the National Research Council (CNR). One of them will have its headquarters in Venice, and a smaller centre will be based in Lecce, at the southern end of the Adriatic coast.
